Jedfire

“Your brother is arriving soon,” Grandpa announced, taking off his thin, silver-rimmed reading glasses as he placed his cell phone down on the coffee table. The three of us had returned to the apartment after lunch, while Conrad had gone for a walk on the beach.

Grandma looked at the time. “In fact, he might already be here. His flight landed over an hour ago.”

I settled into the sofa. “Which one?” When I was met with two blank faces, I clarified. “Which one of my brothers, Cooper or Mitchell?”

I was super close to both of my younger brothers, but I’d be lying if I’d said I wasn’t a little more connected with Cooper. It had nothing at all to do with the fact that Mitchell was adopted. That shit didn’t matter to anyone in my family, especially not me.

It’s just that it was true what they said about twins—they did share an unspoken bond. And with Cooper and I being identical twins, it was as if that somehow only strengthened the ties between us even more.

“Cooper. Mitchell’s staying back to hold down the fort,” Grandpa explained.

“Wow. You think he’s ready for that?” I heard the stupidity of that question as soon as it left my mouth. Of course Mitchell was ready to step up and run the plant. Grandpa wouldn’t have entrusted that responsibility to him if he weren’t. Me, on the other hand...

The steely, determined look in Grandpa’s eyes mixed with his warm smile was all the answer I needed. “He might be a few years younger than you and Coop, but that boy has really found his feet since he met Cayman.”

Grandpa stretched his feet out in front of him, while Grandma, seated next to him on the plush white leather sofa, brought her gin and tonic to her lips. “He’s always been a good boy, but there’s something about being in love that’s ignited a fire under him. He’s so much more outgoing, confident…” Her voice trailed off.

I smiled, my heart filled with happiness for my youngest brother. Then my thoughts quickly snapped back to my twin—and his impending visit. “So, why is Cooper here, then?”

My grandparents exchanged a look, like I’d seen them do countless times. Those times, funnily enough, always coincided with one of my adventures-gone-awry moments. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously, waiting for one of them to answer.

Grandpa finally filled the silence. “He’s worried about you, Jed. What with Vegas, and the fact that you haven’t spent more than a few days back home in lord knows how many months…”

“We all just want to make sure you’re okay, honey,” Grandma added, the ice cubes knocking in her tumbler as I considered her words.

Was I okay?

On the surface, it looked like my life was a continuing shitshow of fuckup after fuckup. That was to be expected. I wasn’t the kinda guy who did things half-assed. No, when I screwed things up, I used my whole damn ass.

But maybe, after almost six years, it had gone on for too long.
