âYour brother is arriving soon,â Grandpa announced, taking off his thin, silver-rimmed reading glasses as he placed his cell phone down on the coffee table. The three of us had returned to the apartment after lunch, while Conrad had gone for a walk on the beach.
Grandma looked at the time. âIn fact, he might already be here. His flight landed over an hour ago.â
I settled into the sofa. âWhich one?â When I was met with two blank faces, I clarified. âWhich one of my brothers, Cooper or Mitchell?â
I was super close to both of my younger brothers, but Iâd be lying if Iâd said I wasnât a little more connected with Cooper. It had nothing at all to do with the fact that Mitchell was adopted. That shit didnât matter to anyone in my family, especially not me.
Itâs just that it was true what they said about twinsâthey did share an unspoken bond. And with Cooper and I being identical twins, it was as if that somehow only strengthened the ties between us even more.
âCooper. Mitchellâs staying back to hold down the fort,â Grandpa explained.
âWow. You think heâs ready for that?â I heard the stupidity of that question as soon as it left my mouth. Of course Mitchell was ready to step up and run the plant. Grandpa wouldnât have entrusted that responsibility to him if he werenât. Me, on the other hand...
The steely, determined look in Grandpaâs eyes mixed with his warm smile was all the answer I needed. âHe might be a few years younger than you and Coop, but that boy has really found his feet since he met Cayman.â
Grandpa stretched his feet out in front of him, while Grandma, seated next to him on the plush white leather sofa, brought her gin and tonic to her lips. âHeâs always been a good boy, but thereâs something about being in love thatâs ignited a fire under him. Heâs so much more outgoing, confidentâ¦â Her voice trailed off.
I smiled, my heart filled with happiness for my youngest brother. Then my thoughts quickly snapped back to my twinâand his impending visit. âSo, why is Cooper here, then?â
My grandparents exchanged a look, like Iâd seen them do countless times. Those times, funnily enough, always coincided with one of my adventures-gone-awry moments. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously, waiting for one of them to answer.
Grandpa finally filled the silence. âHeâs worried about you, Jed. What with Vegas, and the fact that you havenât spent more than a few days back home in lord knows how many monthsâ¦â
âWe all just want to make sure youâre okay, honey,â Grandma added, the ice cubes knocking in her tumbler as I considered her words.
Was I okay?
On the surface, it looked like my life was a continuing shitshow of fuckup after fuckup. That was to be expected. I wasnât the kinda guy who did things half-assed. No, when I screwed things up, I used my whole damn ass.
But maybe, after almost six years, it had gone on for too long.
